Pretorio

Mehadia

Pretorio lay on the climb from the Danube to Tibiscum in the Romanian Banat; just beyond it the road reached its highest point, four hundred and sixty-two metres, at the pass now called Porta Orientalis. Inscriptions of a Dalmatian cohort and a soldier's discharge diploma have been found around Mehadia and between Plugova and Domașnea, where older research placed the station. Praetorium means a commander's quarters or an official lodging, and the map uses the name more than once. The map sets Pretorio fourteen Roman miles from Ad Mediam and nine from Ad Pannonios.
