River
Mindo Flumen
Mignone
Listen to the story
Mindo Flumen stands for the river known to the Romans as Minio, the modern Mignone in southern Etruria; somewhere along the way the copyist turned its name into Mindo. No river is actually drawn here, only a small building beside the name, and scholars disagree whether the river itself or a road station on its bank is meant. Near the point where the Via Aurelia crossed it, remains of Roman sulphur baths survive, and a Roman bridge has been uncovered about one and a half kilometres from the mouth. The poet Virgil names the river, and the road line on to Centumcellae, modern Civitavecchia, is missing on the map.
