Listen to the story
Isex Fluvius is a road station on the Via Aemilia, named after the river beside it, the Idex, which a slip of the pen turned into Isex. The station is just a name with no picture, probably marking the bridge at Ponte d'Idice near Bologna. The map also draws the river itself, labelled in red, running down from the Apennines, across the road and on to the Po. Today the Idice ends in the Reno, but in Roman times it reached the Po delta on its own course, just as the map shows. In 1313 a travellers' hospice stood here, its friars bound to maintain the bridge.
