River

Genesis Flumen

Shtodër? [Barrington] oder Bashtova?

Listen to the story

Genesis Flumen marks a river crossing on the Via Egnatia, the great road that led east from Dyrrachium, and the river is usually identified as the Shkumbin in Albania. Where exactly the station stood is disputed: Bashtova is the favoured candidate, Shtodër another. The map gives only the name, with no picture, and it sits awkwardly: neither it nor the next river name, Hapsum, lines up with its stretch of road. Perhaps the copyist skipped this name, wrote Hapsum in its place, then squeezed it in above to repair the slip.
