River

Hapsum Flumen

Semeni

Listen to the story

Hapsum Flumen marks a station of the Via Egnatia where the road crossed the river Apsus, now the Semeni in Albania. Curiously, the river itself is not drawn. There is only the name, in a Latin form meaning 'towards the Apsus', and spelt with an initial H, just as in several manuscripts of the Greek geographer Strabo. The Roman poet Lucan called the river gentle and easy to navigate, and Caesar and Livy both mention it. The station probably lay near the Karavasta lagoon, and the geographer Ptolemy knew the river's upper course as the Daulia.
