Marta Fluvius
Marta (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Marta Fluvius marks the point where the Via Aurelia crossed the river Marta, the winding outflow of Lake Bolsena, which runs for some seventy-five kilometres through the old territory of Tarquinii to the sea. The map gives only the name, with no picture, yet this was a real road station: remains lie near Casale Querciola on the right bank, close to Tarquinia, and of the Roman bridge that carried the Aurelia only scant traces survive. A separate station, Martanum, stood at the river's mouth, and the river itself is known to have shifted its course.
