River
Misco Flumen
Listen to the story
Misco Flumen, the name of a river, marks a road station on the coastal road between Numana and Potentia, shown as just a name with no picture. It probably stood for the bridge, or the stop beside it, where the road crossed the river, which is usually identified as the Musone in the Marche. The map draws the Misco and its neighbour, the Aspia, as separate streams. Today they meet and reach the sea together, but in Roman times the Misco flowed out about 1500 metres further south, near Loreto, where a shapeless ruin may be the old Roman bridge. Its course moved in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries, partly through deliberate works, because stagnant water near Loreto was fouling the air.
