River
Silarum Flumen
Persano [Pleiades]
Listen to the story
Silarum Flumen marks the crossing of the river Silarus, the modern Sele, near Persano in Campania. The map shows just a name with no picture, set on the road line like any road station, and that is probably what it was: a stop at the bridge over the river. Yet the river itself is never labelled, its course being short and hard to letter, so this one name seems to do double duty for station and stream. The Roman writer Pliny and the Greek geographer Strabo treat the Silarus as the boundary between Lucania and Campania, and Strabo notes the lime in its water.
