River

Sinnum Fluvius

Castel Bolognese? [6]

Listen to the story

Sinnum Fluvius is a curious entry: the name of a river, set on the Via Aemilia between Imola and Faenza, although the river itself is nowhere drawn. The words stand alone, without a picture, and mark a stopping place, probably a road station at the bridge where the road crossed the stream. Only the Tabula remembers it. The river is the Senio, which comes down from the Apennines and meets the old road at Castel Bolognese, where the station most likely stood. In antiquity it flowed straight into the Po; now it joins the Reno.
