Savo Flumen

Sava · Save

Listen to the story

Savo Flumen marks not a town but a crossing, the point where the road from Emona, modern Ljubljana, reached the river Sava, nine Roman miles out, with eleven more to go to Ad Publicanos. The map gives just a name, and it sits noticeably apart from the drawn river, a reminder that the copyist, whether careless or unable to read his model, did not always put names where they belonged. The Sava itself, a tributary of the Danube in southern Pannonia, was navigable along its middle and lower course, flowed past Siscia, Sirmium and Singidunum, and was worshipped as a river god.
