River
Sagar Flumen
bei Kara su · Karasu an der Sakarya-Mündung
Listen to the story
Sagar Flumen, just a name without a picture, marks a river station that the map puts in the wrong place. It probably stood where the road crossed the Sangarius, the modern Sakarya, near Karasu on the Turkish Black Sea coast. But the cartographer seems to have confused that river with the Artanes, which really does reach the sea here, and lent it the Sangarius's famous windings and its role as the border of Bithynia. The true river turns up again further along, short and nameless. Tellingly, the red road leading on breaks off after a zigzag, with no distance given, as if the draughtsman had noticed his mistake.
