Tanno Flumen

San Ippolito

Listen to the story

No picture accompanies Tanno Flumen, only a name on the road through Bruttium, the toe of Italy, and it probably stands for the bridge over the river, or the road station beside it. The spot is placed near San Ippolito in Calabria, but scholars disagree which river is meant: the Amato, or one of its southern tributaries. The figure of eleven Roman miles onward to Vibo seems too short for the Amato. Oddly, the road appears to cross the same river twice, here and at Annicia, either two routes meeting at Vibo or a slip in the drawing.
