Listen to the story
Umbro Flumen was a road station on the Via Aurelia where the road crossed the river Ombrone in southern Tuscany. It probably lay near Torre della Trappola by the coast, or, if the map follows an inland branch of the road, near Istia or Grosseto. The Tabula gives only the name, with no picture. It is one of five places called Umbro close together on the map, where the copyist merged two rivers, the Ambra and the Ombrone, into a single stream. A Roman register of routes lists another station here instead, Ad Lacum Aprilem, named after a nearby lake.
