Magaris
Ganges
Listen to the story
In the far east of the map, in the Ganges region, a town called Magaris stands fifty Roman miles from Parthona, with no distance given onwards. Where it lay is uncertain, probably somewhere in the Ganges valley. The geographer Ptolemy knew two similar names: Magaris, a city of the Salakenoi in the south-east of India, placed in the hills of southern Orissa, and Margara, a city of the Daitichai near the sources of the Ganges. Scholars disagree which one the map means, and some even sought it near the Hindu Kush.
