River
Fluvius Vulpis
Vesubia
Listen to the story
A thick line running into the Var marks Fluvius Vulpis, a river usually identified with the Vésubie, which joins the Var from the left not far from Nice in southern France. The link rests on the Vesubiani, an Alpine people named on the arch at Susa and listed by the Roman writer Pliny, whose name seems to survive in the valley. Scholars disagree, though. One objection places the Vesubiani further up in the mountains and reads the river instead as the Tinée, perhaps echoed by an altar to the nymphs of Volpis found in the Rhineland.
