Listen to the story
The river labelled Fluvius Vesidia seems to carry a borrowed name, one known from this map alone. The real Vesidia was a short coastal river between Pisa and Luna, now the Vezza, and it gave its name to the Versilia region north of the Arno. Yet the map sends this river into the sea south of the Arno, between the stations of Velinis and Vadis Volateris. It is therefore usually read as the Cecina, which linked Volterra with the sea, though the Era, a tributary of the Arno, has also been suggested. The map draws it flowing down from the Apennines, crossing two roads, then swinging in a wide bend to the coast.
