River

Fluvius Umatia

Naviglio di Cremona o. Oglio (Miller)

Listen to the story

Fluvius Umatia is a river of the Lombard plain, most probably today's Serio, although older research linked it with the Naviglio di Cremona or the Oglio. Its name, written in red, occurs nowhere but on the Tabula. The map has it rise in the same mountains as the neighbouring river Ubartum, cross the roads to Brescia and to Bedriacum, and flow into the Po beside Cremona, even though the real Serio joins the Adda. Brixia, modern Brescia, lies on its bank here, while the Roman poet Catullus places the town on the Mella, a river the map leaves out.
