River

Fluvius Tontus

Tundja · Tundža

Listen to the story

The course the Tabula draws for Fluvius Tontus does not belong to it at all: the line matches the Ergene, a river further south that feeds the Hebrus. The real river is the Tundja, which rises in the Haemus mountains, now the Stara Planina, and joins the Hebrus near Hadrianopolis, modern Edirne. Perhaps the mapmaker or a copyist confused the two. This spelling occurs nowhere else; the usual name was Tonzos, and coins of Hadrianopolis show the river as a god. The geographer Ptolemy went astray too, placing its mouth on the Black Sea.
