River
Fluvius Ticenum
Ticino
Listen to the story
A long river line rising in the mountain chain read as the Alps marks the Fluvius Ticenum, the Ticino. After crossing several roads, it flows into a large lake that the map leaves unnamed, certainly Lago Maggiore, and leaves it at the very point where it entered, so that inflow and outflow merge into a single stream. It joins the Po beside the two-towered drawing of Pavia, the Roman Ticinum. Near this river in 218 BC, Hannibal's cavalry defeated the consul Scipio, and the river's broad, deep bed covered the Roman retreat.
