River
Fluvius Tigtila
Bisagno
Listen to the story
Between Genoa and the neighbouring station of Ricina, the map draws a coastal river running into the Ligurian Sea, labelled Fluvius Tigtila and known from no other ancient source. Its mouth, east of Genoa, points to the Bisagno, the stream that marked the eastern edge of Roman Genoa. Upstream the drawing goes astray and cuts across the road from Dertona to Iria, which the real Bisagno never does, but on this map only the river mouths can be trusted. The Roman writer Pliny names a river Fertor here, perhaps the same stream under another name.
