River
Fluvius Ubartum
Brembo? (Barrington)
Listen to the story
Probably today's Brembo in Lombardy, which rises in the Orobie Alps and joins the Adda near Treviglio, is the river the Tabula calls Fluvius Ubartum, a name known from no other ancient source. The map draws it flowing from an unnamed mountain into the Po. The identification rests on the road from Como to Brescia, which crosses the river. On the map the names of Bergamo and Lecco seem to have been swapped, and once they are put back, the river falls between the two towns, exactly where the Brembo runs. Some scholars instead saw the smaller Molgora, near whose source lies a village called Cobarte.
