Fluvius Ticenum

Ticino

Listen to the story

This stretch of water belongs to the Fluvius Ticenum, the Ticino, a left-bank tributary of the Po, although the map draws this part without any name. It flows out of a lake, either Lake Maggiore or Lake Como, and runs down into the Po. That is the puzzle: it seems to continue the named Ticino, yet it has its own lake source. Perhaps the map is clumsily trying to show that the real Ticino flows through a lake, or two rivers and two lakes have been merged, the other being the Adda leaving Lake Como. On the Ticino, Hannibal defeated Publius Cornelius Scipio in 218 BC.
