River

Fluvius Tanno

Pesipe (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Fluvius Tanno is drawn as a river line in the far south of Italy, its name written at the source; the same name turns up again near the mouth, where the road crosses the water at a road station, perhaps the bridge itself or a halt beside it. The river lay in Bruttium, today's Calabria, and was probably the Pesipe, a southern tributary of the Amato. A list of places compiled in Ravenna knows it too. Oddly, the map seems to cross this one river twice, at Tanno and again at Annicia, and scholars cannot say whether there were really two roads or whether the drawing is simply wrong.
