Listen to the story
Scilatio is Scylletium, the Roman colony of Scolacium, whose ruins lie at Roccelletta di Borgia on the Gulf of Squillace. Legend made it an Athenian foundation, and the poet Virgil calls it ship-wrecking Scylaceum. Here Italy is at its narrowest, and early Greek writers placed the very edge of what they called Italia at this spot. Gaius Gracchus settled a colony here, and the statesman Cassiodorus was born here. The map moves it inland, although it lay by the sea.
