Scatras

crest of Haemus

Scatras lay near the crest of the Haemus, the Balkan range, by the pass at today's Sudžuluk; the Roman register of routes writes it Scatris. The map counts twelve miles from Pannisso and eighteen on to Cazalet, and eighteen more to Ancialis on the coast. The register goes from here to Ancialis in twenty-four. Twenty-four is a little too few, the map's thirty-six too many; to make the map's figures work, a traveller must take a detour by Arnautkiöj.
