Scampis
Teqin Madhe, Elbasani
Scampis lay at Elbasan in Albania, on the Via Egnatia by the river Shkumbin, a town of the Eordaei placed to watch over the great road. A Roman fort of three hundred and eight by three hundred and forty-eight metres was built here, probably under Diocletian, and renewed in early Byzantine times; an early Christian basilica stood outside its walls, and a bishop is recorded from 458. The pilgrim from Bordeaux calls the place the mansio of Hiscampis, and the Greek geographer Ptolemy already lists Scampis.
