Scarabantio

Sopron

Listen to the story

Scarabantio is Scarbantia, today Sopron in Hungary, a town on the Amber Road. After a late Celtic hilltop settlement, veterans were settled here early in the first century, and under the emperor Domitian it became a self-governing town, the municipium Flavium. Destroyed in the Marcomannic Wars, it had walls and a Christian community from the early fourth century. Its forum, town wall and amphitheatre have been excavated, and nearby lies a Mithras sanctuary cut into the rock. On the map the figure of thirty-three miles to Sabaria is written with a dot in the middle of the numeral.
