Scarponna
offenbar j. Scarpon bei Pont-à-Mousson (Miller) · Dieulouard (Barrington)
Scarponna, today Scarponne near Dieulouard between Metz and Toul, was where the road crossed the Moselle, here divided into four arms, by a series of bridges. The Roman village of the Mediomatrici covered about ten hectares, and its many inscriptions point to trade and crafts. In 366 the Roman general Jovinus defeated the Alamanni near here, as the Roman historian Ammianus relates. A fort surrounded by the river was added later, and in 451 the Huns besieged it. In Merovingian times Scarponna struck its own coins.
