Segesta

Listen to the story

Segesta, the old Elymian city of western Sicily, was called Egesta by the Greeks, and the Romans, the story goes, added an S so that the name would not sound like egestas, poverty. Its Doric temple, never finished yet almost perfectly preserved, and its great theatre on the hill still stand; below lay hot springs and a harbour at today's Castellammare. The map's thirteen Roman miles, about nineteen kilometres, from Drepanum are too few, perhaps because a stop at Mount Eryx has dropped out.
