Panormo

Palermo

Listen to the story

Panormo is Panormus, now Palermo, an ancient Phoenician city whose Greek name means all harbour, for its excellent anchorage. Under Rome it was a free city and then a colony of Augustus, and the emperor Vespasian settled veterans on its land. Oddly for so great a place, the map gives it no picture at all, only the plain mark of a road station, and its next distance has to be squeezed in above the name.
