Patavissa

Turda

Patavissa is Potaissa, today Turda in Romania. From the outbreak of the Marcomannic Wars in 168 its garrison was the Fifth Legion Macedonica, and beside the camp a civilian town grew up that Septimius Severus made a municipium. Its people were mixed, Roman settlers alongside a local Dacian population, and there were salt mines nearby. A milestone of the year 109, found at Aiton, stands ten Roman miles from both Potaissa and Napoca, so the whole stretch was twenty miles, where the map gives twenty-four and draws the road in two pieces.
