Temsa

Nocera Tirinese · Piano della Tirena (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Near Temsa, the Greek travel writer Pausanias tells, the ghost of one of Odysseus's companions demanded a young girl every year, until the boxer Euthymus fought him and drove him off. Temsa is Temesa, in Roman times Tempsa, on the coast of Calabria, and this coastal entry, unlike its inland double, fits the ancient sources. Rome sent a colony here in 194 BC, and after the Spartacus revolt runaway slaves held out here.
