Listen to the story

Tergeste is Trieste, at the head of the Adriatic, and its name reaches far back: the Greek geographer Artemidorus of Ephesus already knew it as Tegestron. Hirtius, who completed Caesar's account of the Gallic War, mentions its people for the year fifty-two BC; the Greek geographer Strabo calls it a stronghold, and the Roman writer Pliny a colony of Roman citizens. The list of places compiled in Ravenna names it three times, once as Tregeste. On the map Tergeste lies on the coast road from the springs of the Timavus into Istria.
