Tenurcio

Tournus

Tenurcio is Tournus on the Saône. There were really two places: an older Celtic settlement on an island in the river, and the road station on the right bank a few kilometres upstream, with supply depots that later received a fort and grew into the town. In 197 the emperor Septimius Severus defeated his rival Clodius Albinus here, as the late Roman imperial biographies record. On the map this name and the three below it each sit one stretch too high, because the copyist wanted room for the long words after Lugdunum.
