Templum N.N.

Listen to the story

Templum, simply 'temple', is the label given to a small drawing of a house that carries no name of its own on the map. It stands on the island of Achilles, also called Leuce, in the Black Sea, and seems to share the island's name rather than having one of its own. The Roman writer Pliny knew the island as famous for the hero's tomb, and the historian Ammianus described Leuce as uninhabited and dedicated to Achilles. The little building is therefore best understood as the hero's sanctuary.
