Templum Iovis Aenesii

Listen to the story

Templum Iovis Aenesii, the temple of Jupiter Aenesius, is a name the map never writes: the copyist left only a small unlabelled drawing of a house on an island, and the title was supplied later by modern scholarship. The island is linked with Cephallenia, today Kefalonia in Greece, and the epithet honours Jupiter as the sky god worshipped on high summits. Oddly, the little building lies on its side, perhaps turned to line up with the shore of the gulf below it.
