Tenedone

(settlement and bridge at Zurzach SWI) (Barrington) · Rheinheim o. Zurzach (Miller)

Tenedone is Tenedo, today Zurzach in the Swiss canton of Aargau, where the road from Vindonissa crossed the Rhine. A wooden bridge stood here even before the Romans, and a Celtic cemetery suggests an important Helvetian settlement. The Romans built a fort in Flavian times, where gravestones of soldiers of the Eleventh Legion were found, and in the late empire joined it by a wall to a second, square fort, making a single stronghold. At low water the remains of two Roman bridges can still be seen in the Rhine. The name is known only from this map.
