River
Fl. Lametus
Amato (Barrington)
The river Lametus is the Amato in Calabria, though the map itself leaves it without a name; scholars supply it. The Tabula draws it as a tributary running down from an unnamed mountain. Because a road station called Crater stands close to its source, map readers have understandably taken the river to bear that name too, but that inference is mistaken. The Greek writer Hecataeus already knew a river Lametos and a people named after it, the Lametinoi, in the territory of Croton, and Aristotle spoke of a Lametic gulf where the river met the sea.
