River
Fl. Liris
Garigliano
Listen to the story
The river Liris, now the Garigliano, is drawn on the Tabula but left without a name. Its line rises from a small, isolated group of mountains, winds gently past the station Ad Flexum and crosses two roads, the second of them the Via Appia, before reaching the sea at Minturnae. That lower stretch matches reality, but the upper course does not, and probably shows a tributary near Casinum instead. The poet Horace called the Liris the silent river for its slow final reach, and the Greek geographer Strabo says it was once called Clanis, perhaps through a confusion with another river.
