River
Fl. Licus
Aydınlar Çayı · Gülünç Su
The river Licus crosses the map without a label of its own; its name is taken from the road station at its mouth, Lygum Fluvius. That station name points to a copyist's slip, a Greek Lycos in which a capital C was misread as G. Now called the Gülünç Su, in Turkey, the small river reaches the Black Sea close to Heraclea, modern Ereğli, and ancient sailing guides put its mouth twenty stadia from the town. The Greek writer Xenophon found it about two plethra, some thirty metres, wide in the fertile plain named after it, and the poet Apollonius of Rhodes has the Argonauts sail past its waters.
