Carura

Tekke, Landkreis Saraköy

Carura was a village on the border between Phrygia and Caria, at Tekke near Saraköy, with inns and hot springs that welled up in the Maeander itself and above its bank. Strabo tells a grim story: a brothel-keeper lodging at the inns with a great crowd of women was swallowed up with all of them when an earthquake struck one night. Halfway to Laodicea stood the revered sanctuary of Men Karou with a famous school of physicians. The map gives the spa no bath picture, and where the road line usually makes a small hook for a station, the copyist set only a dot, probably in haste.
