Listen to the story

Philadelphia receives a pair of towers on the map, probably a nod to how richly the city flourished on fertile soil and a healing spring. It was founded as a colony of Pergamon and named after King Attalus the Second, called Philadelphos, the brother-loving. The town lay at the foot of Mount Tmolus in an earthquake-prone volcanic land, and the Greek geographer Strabo wrote that its walls cracked and shifted almost daily, so most citizens preferred to farm out in the countryside. The Book of Revelation praises its church, and its ruins lie at Alaşehir in Turkey.
