City

Philadelfia

Amman

Listen to the story

Long before it was called Philadelphia, this city was Rabbath Ammon, capital of the Ammonites, and it was captured by Joab, King David's general. It was later renamed after the Egyptian king Ptolemy the Second, known as Philadelphus, and its ruins lie in Amman, the capital of Jordan. The map places it sixty-two Roman miles, about ninety-two kilometres, from Rababatora and thirteen from Gadda, although the road line towards Gadda is not drawn. Numerous milestones reveal a branch road to Gerasa, Pella and Scythopolis, which the map leaves out.
