Listen to the story
Phinipopolis is a copyist's slip for Philippopolis, the city of Philip, founded in 341 BC by Philip the Second of Macedon on the river Hebrus. Today it is Plovdiv in Bulgaria. The map marks it with a pair of towers and keeps the founder's name, ignoring the official Roman name Trimontium, given because the town sat on three hills. One figure does not fit. Only twelve Roman miles, about eighteen kilometres, are given to the next station, Subradice, while the modern road runs about eighty kilometres, so one or probably two stations seem to be missing.
