Pitinna

Dharanikota? (Barrington)

Listen to the story

Pitinna is a name the map itself never wrote: at this spot in India the Tabula shows only a town symbol, and the name has been restored from a list of places compiled in Ravenna and from the medieval writer Gervase of Tilbury. It may be the Pityndra that the geographer Ptolemy calls a metropolis. Where it lay is disputed. Older research took the map's long figure of two hundred and twenty from Calippe and placed the town at Dawei in southern Myanmar. Others look to the delta of the Krishna and Godavari rivers, and it is now tentatively identified with Dharanikota in India. No road leads on from here.
