Penne
Listen to the story
Pinna, now Penne in the hills of Abruzzo in Italy, was the chief town of the Vestini, and the Roman poet Silius Italicus called it green Pinna. The map gives it the usual pair of towers but sets it on the coast road, although the town lies further inland than Hadria. The road from Pinna to Hadria has evidently been merged with the coastal route, whether by the mapmaker or the copyist. The Greek historian Diodorus tells how, in the war of Rome's Italian allies from 91 to 88 BC, Pinna stayed loyal to Rome even when its besiegers killed the townspeople's children, held as hostages, before their parents' eyes.
