Phaselis
Faselis Harabeleri, 3,5 km nö. von Tekirova
Listen to the story
Phaselis was a Greek harbour town on the coast of Lycia, close to the border with Pamphylia; its ruins lie near Tekirova in Turkey. Settlers from Lindos on Rhodes probably founded it around 690 BC, though legend named Mopsos as its founder. The Greek geographer Strabo praised its three harbours, and the travel writer Pausanias says the spear of Achilles was kept in its temple of Athena. Pirates later used it as their base until Rome destroyed it in 77 BC. On the map, the figure of forty-seven miles to Attalia is there, but the road line itself is missing, probably because the space was too crowded.
