Listen to the story
Polemonium, near Bolaman on the Black Sea coast of Turkey, was probably named after Polemon the First, whom Mark Antony made king of Pontus in 37 BC. It very likely took the place of an older Greek town called Side, and stood on a flat gravel terrace where the river Sidenus opens into a wide bay, without the natural defences of the other important towns along this coast. The Roman historian Ammianus still counted it among the great cities of the region. On the map it seems to mark the end of the Black Sea's southern shore, a misjudgement with a long ancient tradition, and the distance to the next station is missing.
