Pompeiopolis

Viranşehir

Listen to the story

Pompeiopolis lies today at Viranşehir, beside the sea near Mersin in southern Turkey, and its name means the city of Pompey, who refounded the old town of Soloe. The map, however, has lost track of it. Here it stands as a bare name without a picture, on a road coming down from the Taurus mountains, although the real city lay on the coast. It turns up again a little further on, more correctly placed and marked with a pair of towers, and the very next station, Soloe, is the same city once more. By mistake, one town appears three times.
