Just a name, with no picture beside it, marks a harbour called Portus Callire on the coast near the ancient city of Odessos, today Varna in Bulgaria. The name has faded, and only part of it can still be made out, but older copies read it in full, and that reading is not in doubt. No ancient text mentions a harbour of this name. The Greek writer Arrian speaks simply of the harbour of Odessos, while the geographer Ptolemy and the Roman writer Pliny call the city Ordesos.
